12th Symposium on Humanistic Buddhism 2026

20 & 21 June 2026

The 12th Symposium on Humanistic Buddhism is organized by the Fo Guang Shan Institute for Humanistic Buddhism, the Humanistic Buddhism Centre at Nan Tien Institute, and the Hsing Yun Education Foundation Australia. This year, the symposium will be hosted by Nan Tien Institute in Australia.

The Humanistic Buddhism Symposium began in 2013 as an initiative of the Fo Guang Shan Institute for Humanistic Buddhism aimed at providing a platform for exchange of ideas on the academic discourse around Humanistic Buddhism. Past conferences have included a diverse range of themes including heritage, Buddhist responses to global disruption, and the intersection between faith and technology. The symposium has developed into an international academic platform that attracts scholars from around the world, laying a solid foundation for the global growth of Humanistic Buddhism as a field of academic study.

The theme of the 12th Symposium is On The Lamp Transmission Record of Humanistic Buddhism by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. This year, scholars in religious studies and related disciplines, as well as the directors from the FGS University Consortium who specialize in the study of Humanistic Buddhism, will come together to share their reflections and perspectives on the Lamp Transmission Record. Through these discussions, the symposium will explore how this important compendium can be effectively leveraged to present Humanistic Buddhism to English-speaking academia and other key stakeholders. The text is a 6-volume compendium compiled by the Venerable Master’s disciples, first published in Chinese in May 2025, embodying the core teachings of the 395-volume Complete Works of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and constitutes an essential guide to his ideas on the theoretical and practical aspects of Humanistic Buddhism.
